Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Have you ever wondered what is going on behind the scenes? When your search for anything on Google, Bing, etc. How do these sites with relevance to your search pop up? That's where Search Engine Optimization (SEO) comes into action. SEO stands for “search engine optimization.” which means the process of improving your site to increase its quality and quantity of traffic to your website through organic search (search engine results). The better organic visibility your pages have in search engine results, the better growth in your business or service. But what are different search engines?
Different search engines and optimizations -
With the biggest market share of about 92.4 percent, the most popular and common search engine is google. It's the go-to search engine for the majority of people. Google has arguably the best search engine algorithm to provide the best results to the end-user. Though Youtube has given the competition in terms of market share to Google, It will still be counted on the list of Google as Youtube is owned by Google.
Bing
Launched in 2009 Bing is Microsoft's default browser or we can say search engine. It's the only existing competition for Google. Even after trying continuously to improve the user interface, Bing is still second to Google by a large margin. Bing has a market share of only 2.7%. Bing also allows different services on its surface like photos, videos, and maps making it easier for businesses to provide their details to rank better.
Yahoo
As of February 2021 yahoo holds a market share of 1.47 percent. It can be considered as a competition to Bing. Yahoo was a leader as a free email provider till the user details were hacked in 2015. The search engine was famous and popular before Google took over the market.
Baidu
As the People's Republic of China is ruled by a communist party it doesn't allow firms like Google based in a capitalist country USA. Hence, China has its form of Google named Baidu which was founded. By a Chinese entrepreneur Eric Xu in January 2000. It is often termed as "The Chinese Google" and has features parallel to it as well. This web search is formulated to provide results for the website, audio files, and pictures. It also provides maps, news, cloud storage, and much more.
There are around 10 more search engines but none of them are worth the search only because of Google. Google has monopolized the search engine market. That's what makes it important when it comes to SEO learning or driving traffic to the consumer to the website. If you are getting a whopping 92 percent of the total audience from Google itself then why would anyone learn to optimize other engines? Also, Google provides simple and better results using the Google search algorithm which is extremely useful for searchers.
Uniqueness of google search
Google just doesn't provide a list of text-based links to answer queries of the public. Some of its top features are -
Map pack -
Basic details of the consumer including each location of the business are shared with Google search engine by Google maps. It usually shows the result when we search for business or service in the local region.
Google my business -
It is a free tool for small and local businesses. It helps in managing their presence. Businesses give contact details and locations to fulfill the queries of the consumers if needed.
Accurate search results -
A survey in 2019 found out that only 7 percent of people check for the second page after searching for any query. That's the expectation we have from Google that 93 percent of the total people searching queries, if not found on the first page they change the frame of the query rather than checking for the results past the first page.
Optimization of a website is easier-
SEO is easier in Google when compared with other search engines. Though Google keeps its algorithm secret there is a bunch of advice you can take from Google itself to rank your website easily.
How SEO works in Google and other search engines
The algorithm by each search engine decides the ranking structure of a website on its system. However, the algorithms have evolved to such an extent that it's extremely complex to take into account hundreds or even thousands of different ranking factors determining the rankings of their SERPs.
We have divided the whole process into 3 core metrics that how a search engine determines the quality of a website.
Links-
links from different websites play a significant role in determining the rank of your website. Since it is believed that why would a website link out to your website if your quality of content is low. So, sites that acquire links from many other sites gain PageRank in the eyes of search engines. If the site which is linking out to your website is itself definitive, the chances of your site getting ranked higher is more.
Content-
Search engine bots also analyze the content of a web page to determine if it would be appropriate for any given search query. So you need to use the targeted keywords that a user of a search engine would search for. Content decides a substantial portion of SEO.
Page structure-
Since the web pages are written in HTML or PHP, it is important to make sure that the coding structure comprises relevant keywords in the title, URL, and headers of the page which makes the site crawlable.
As the structure of the code also defines the ranking of the site, you can control it to some extent.
Google algorithm updates -
The complex Google algorithms are very fast at retrieving data from its search index and instantly delivers the best possible results for any query. The SO uses a combination of ranking factors that are updated so frequently that it's hard to keep a track of all. So we would discuss some of the major updates in recent years.
Panda update -
In 2011, pandas update came and today it's at the core of the Google algorithm. It assigns a quality score and then scores are used as a ranking factor. It was a mild factor to determine the ranking at first but in 2016 it was incorporated properly into the algorithm.
Penguin update -
In 2012, a new update came to downrank sites that have an unnatural backlink. This update ended buying links from link farms.
Hummingbird update -
The update came in 2013. The Hummingbird algorithm makes it possible for a web page to rank for a query even if it doesn’t contain the precise words the searcher entered.
Mobile update -
This update shifted the focus from desktop version to mobile version of your website and ranks those sites better which are user-friendly. The update came in 2015
Medic update -
This update stopped a lot of unnecessary sites from ranking as it focused on EAT(expertise, authority, trust). The updated unranked sites provide information related to medical, law, finance, and education which are uploaded by an expert in the field or by an authority.
Rankbrain-
This update was a follow-up update of the hummingbird update. The update made Google understand the purpose behind queries and assist in best-matching search results in response to those queries. It takes synonyms, implied words, and the personal search history of the searcher to give better results.
Bert update -
It was probably the biggest update of Google in the past 5 years. To describe the update google said:
“These improvements are oriented around improving language understanding, particularly for more natural language/conversational queries, as BERT can help Search better understand the nuance and context of words in Searches and better match those queries with helpful results.
Particularly for longer, more conversational queries, or searches where prepositions like “for” and “to” matter a lot to the meaning, Search will be able to understand the context of the words in your query. You can search in a way that feels natural for you.” In December 2019 Google said that BERT was beginning its worldwide rollout, and included over 40 languages. Again this update made keywords important for organic ranking.
Let's be honest, getting ranked isn't a piece of cake. There's a lot of hard work and dedication behind all these. So should you do it all on your own? Absolutely not! Why are they here then? You just need to find the right organization that will provide solutions to all your problems.
